Loreto is a charming and historic seaside town in Mexico’s Baja California Sur. Located about half way down the state’s coastline, Loreto boasts phenomenal history, gorgeous views of the Gulf of California and the Sierra de la Giganta mountains, and a friendly local community. Considered the first capital of the Californias, Loreto is home to a wide array of unique attractions, none more iconic than the Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó or The Mission of Our Lady of Loreto. Founded in 1697 by the Jesuits, the Mission Church is a must-see attraction downtown set right off the main plaza. From there, follow the city’s cobblestone streets around to discover delicious family owned restaurants, small independent hotels, shops and more.

The Gulf’s waters are one of Loreto’s primary attractions. It is so rich with diverse marine life that none other than Jacques Cousteau called the Gulf of California, “the world’s aquarium.” In addition to spotting dolphins, sea lions, and giant manta rays, whales including blue fin, humpback, grey and orcas are frequent visitors off Loreto’s shores. Sportfishing, diving, boating, kayaking and paddle boarding are just a few of the other activities that lure outdoor enthusiasts to Loreto. The Gulf and nearby islands are so integral to Loreto’s identity and desire to protect nature that the federal government designated the waters and nearby islands as the Loreto Marine Park which is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On land, the adventure continues with mountain biking, trekking, bird watching, rock climbing, golf, and more. Don’t forget to leave time to explore the territories beyond Loreto too! Historic missions, ancient cave paintings, natural oases and more await to be explored. Safe, small, uncrowded, affordable and rich with natural bounty, Loreto is the ideal destination for today’s traveler.
